ABOUT US |
|
Stokenham Luncheon Club is run by local
volunteers under the auspices of WRVS and caters for approximately 50
senior citizens of Stokenham Parish. This service has been operating at
Stokenham Parish Hall each Thursday in term time for the past 20 years.
Started by Shirley Stewart and Ann Baverstock and now organised by Helen
Dickson and Virginia Best the club
provides a two course meal plus tea or coffee each week supplemented in
particularly cold weather by a cup of soup and there is always a
choice of soft drinks. For special anniversaries, 90th birthdays etc.
there is always an iced and decorated fruit cake, large enough for
all the members and the hall and tables are decorated.
We have several gifted and very able cooks who take
turn to prepare and cook the meat course or the pudding. Helpers lay the
tables, arrange flowers, prepare and cook the fresh vegetables for the
meal and then serve. They also clear and sweep the kitchen, the hall and
operate the dishwasher after lunch. In addition we have a series of
volunteer drivers who bring the members to the lunch and return them
home. Thus, perhaps there may be as many as a dozen volunteers on duty
each week who not only give of their services but also lend an ear to
woes and jokes and exchange the latest news for it is the human contact
that is one of the essential ingredients that the club provides for the
elderly members who live alone and may not go out from week to week
except to the Thursday Luncheon Club. |
