Torcross Chapel

Torcross Chapel was brought into being by a small group of Devon Christians on August 4th 1883. The sum of £160 was raised by way of a Bazaar. This was a good start towards the total cost of £500. By the 18th October the same year, Morton Sparke Esq. laid the foundation stone and on Monday 30th May the following year, the Chapel was completed.

The building work was carried out by Messrs. Edgcome and Harvey. (both local names today). The design was from Mr.J. Wills of Derby.

The inaugural meeting consisted of the Revd. T. Sellecks of Newton Abbot, taking the morning and afternoon services. Then in the evening the speakers were Mr Hewitt of Kingsbridge. Mr Wilks, Mr Balkwill and the elected minister Pastor S. Robinson.

There was a small but active congregation, a church committee, a Sunday School and a church meeting once a month. Being Congregational by denomination the members of the church take a large part of the running and organisation in all matters. The Bible is held as the authority and is always referred to in the Sunday services. Salvation through Jesus Christ is the constant message which is shared with everyone.

Even in the 19th Century, co-operation with the Anglican Church was encouraged and today this continues with fellowship of near by Christian denominations. The simple rule is; as long as the Gospel is proclaimed then there is good ground for Christian fellowship. Torcross chapel has remained open for over one hundred years and in recent times has had renovation work carried out which includes a new meeting room, a new kitchen, and toilet facilities. The main hall has also been decorated  throughout.

Sunday worship is at 3.00pm.
