Taizé
In 1940 Brother Roger, a Swiss reformed priest, came to live in Taizé on the edge of a French hamlet near Cluny where he established a Community dedicated to Christian ecumenical work and worship. Gradually over a period of time a group of Brothers from various countries and traditions came to live, work and pray with him. During the 1960's the first pilgrims from all over the world came to join in the worship and prayer. The services of worship are simple and moving occasions. The special Taizé songs now well known to many of us form a very important part of the worship,
A retired Anglican priest was inspired to Anglicise the Ecumenical Taizé Eucharist and he then organised such a service in the small, 46 seat church of St Andrew on the sea front of Beesands, a tiny fishing village in the Stokenham Parish.
The first service was held on the second Sunday of November 1997. The weather was atrocious, a gale was blowing and it was raining very heavily. The church however was packed with some 54 people attending and it also proved successful attracting some non-church goers.
It is now held on the second Sunday of every second month through the year. (January is the base month).
