CHILLINGTON COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
UPDATE

FIREWORKS DISPLAY
Chillington does it again! 2008 fireworks WERE, as promised, at least as good as last year’s….maybe a few too many bangs for the small children present but a glorious collection of colours and sparkles. Nick, Andy and Gareth did a fantastic job setting up and controlling the display – our thanks to them. The evening was chilly but clear and bright, so we were thrilled to see record numbers of families on the field. The bonfire was as ever (thanks to Clive) a great success and blazed beautifully on into the night! For the first time we had a “best Guy” competition which although only had 4 entries was well received. Next year we are hoping for many more entries! The bar and BBQ both did a roaring trade and thanks to the ever willing and industrious Committee members who make it all happen and to all who supported the evening. Our apologies for the time it took to get into the field; there’ll be better arrangements next year. We thankfully covered the cost of the fireworks so are looking forward to putting the surplus to good use, including a fundraiser for Devon Air Ambulance and Shelterbox in the New Year.

CAROLS ROUND THE TREE
The Annual
Chillington ‘Carols round the tree’ event is Tuesday 16th December at
7.30pm. We meet by the Christmas tree next to the bus shelter (opposite
the post Office) and sing carols accompanied by the Kingsbridge Silver Band.
This is followed by delicious mulled wine and mince pies at the Open Arms -
generously offered by Jed and family. All villagers are welcome and anyone who
has been before knows this is a lovely festive event and not to be missed!
Keep a lookout for posters
around the village as well as this website, for future events.
THE WEATHER WAS ON OUR SIDE
Well, the sun certainly shone on the righteous on Saturday 23rd August when we had our Summer Fair. Against all expectations the weather was marvellous – what a relief! This year’s event was a great success with lots of things to do and see: the regular book and plant stalls; a large array of cakes which disappeared rapidly and a vast collection of bric a brac to rummage through. For younger visitors there were cuddly toys to adopt, bowling, ping pong jars, Pluck a Duck, and face-painting. Visitors of all ages took the challenges of the Electric light show, tin can alley, the coconut shy and the greasy pole—a perennial favourite! Malcolm Weir from Charleton came along with his loom to demonstrate his weaving skills; it was nice to see young people showing an interest in this ancient art. There was interest, too, in Pepper the Barn Owl, kindly brought along by Shirley from Kingsbridge.
The cream teas went like hot cakes! Liz Bridge made all the scrumptious scones and buns despite not being able to be there herself. Huge thanks to her as ever for her perennial support in the cream tea department. Her place in the tea shop this year was taken by Marion Hughes and Alma Ashley – thanks to them for stepping in at short notice.
Our thanks as always go to Dave Gritton for a lively commentary throughout the afternoon, Jed of the Open Arms for running the bar for us again, not to mention the Frazier-Roberts’ burger stall and all the Committee’s hard work.
Final figures indicate we made in the region of £950, so thanks to villagers and holiday-makers for coming along and making all the effort worthwhile; we can now plan the Fireworks… ! LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE.
